Master’s in Neuroengineering

A professional who develops simulations of neural networks in machines powered by four thousand processing cores, a person who manufactures matrices of 128 electrodes with thicknesses smaller than a hair thread. An academic who produces three-dimensional images of the nervous cell system or who works with Brain-Machine Interfaces for the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries.

Endeavors such as these are common in the day-to-day activities of students at the Master’s Degree Program in Neuroengineering of the Santos Dumont Institute.

At the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neurosciences (IIN-ELS, as portuguese abbreviation), one of the units of the Institute located in the city of Macaíba, Brazil, there is, since 2013, the first Brazilian Master’s Degree Program in Neuroengineering approved by Brazilian Government / CAPES. The course has the following objectives:

I – To develop high-level science in Neuroengineering;

II – To train qualified professionals for multi and interdisciplinary research in Neuroengineering, to work in universities, companies, and research institutions;

III – To encourage, spread and apply new knowledge and technologies in a regional, national and international scales;

IV – To promote science as an agent of cultural stimulation and integration with local communities.

The program seeks to train distinguished professionals who are able to transit between academic and business sectors (public or private), articulating neurosciences and engineering. This future researcher must be well qualified in scientific, political, ethical and social areas, as well as in the skill to work in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams.

The structure of the Program was designed to overcome the barriers between undergraduate courses in the exact, biological, and human areas. There is a real need for multidisciplinary training in Brazil, especially in the Northeast region.

The Master’s Program in Neuroengineering is free of charge, has a duration of 24 months and welcomes international students. Applications are open twice a year.
