The Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) was one of the 45 institutions selected by the Rio Grande do Norte State Department of Public Health (Sesap RN) to receive the “SUS Aqui se Ensina” certification. The certification is a recognition of practices to promote the National Policy on Permanent Education in Health carried out by the institutions. Its objective is to promote greater visibility for the importance of strengthening and qualifying care practices, expanding spaces for dialogue between work and education.

“The ISD has one of its most important strategic objectives in education for the health professions. Strengthening the SUS is an institutional purpose and training the people who make the System work also imbued with this purpose is vital for our country. Here, SUS is taught and that is a reason for great pride for us. This recognition encourages us to do even more and better, as this action is necessary for a fairer and more humane transformation of the Potiguar and Brazilian reality.”, highlighted the institution's general director, Reginaldo Freitas Júnior.

The ISD operates from two units in Macaíba: the Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center (Anita) and the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neurosciences (IIN-ELS). Anita works as a great school for the health professions and related areas. The performance includes activities in the areas of high-risk prenatal care; infectology during pregnancy; specialized assistance service for children living with HIV/AIDS; fetal medicine; Early Identification and Stimulation Ambulatory and the Center Specialized in Rehabilitation ISD, which works with the rehabilitation of people with physical, visual, auditory and intellectual disabilities.

“The assistance provided at the ISD is central to the principles of social responsibility, humanization and comprehensive care in health care, contributing to a fairer and more egalitarian improvement in the Brazilian reality, valuing ethical values in training and professional practice, humanism, quality technical-scientific, respect for diversity and institutional commitment.”, says Anita’s manager, Lilian Lira Lisboa.

The ISD was selected within Axis 2, which includes “Health Services, Practice Scenarios and Research/Extension”, especially for the areas of assistance in Maternal and Child Health and Health of People with Disabilities. The institution has been operating in health care for almost 10 years, exclusively via the SUS, offering several practical scenarios for academic activities and mandatory curricular internship for courses in Medicine, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Speech Therapy, Pedagogy, Nutrition, Pharmacy and Social Work.

In addition to graduation, ISD is also the setting for teaching and service of Residency Programs, Stricto Sensu Post-Graduation (Masters and Doctorates) and Permanent Education. In 2022, for example, at least 600 people went through educational activities at ISD.
