Health Education is the essence of this unit of the Santos Dumont Institute (ISD) dedicated to the training, development and continuing education of health professionals. ISD believes that investing in health education and research is contributing to a fairer and more human transformation of Brazilian social reality.

The  Anita Garibaldi Center for Education and Research in Health (Anita) was founded in 2008, and operates as a large school for undergraduate students, medical and multiprofessional residencies, professionals and researchers in the health sciences and related fields.

The education and interprofessional work in health developed at Anita aims to reorient the training and the health care model from the perspective of integrality and humanization of care, valuing users and their needs as fundamental elements for strengthening the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS).

Located in Macaíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Anita integrates the SUS network as a referral service for multidisciplinary care for maternal and child health and for auditory, physical and intellectual rehabilitation and, more recently, visual rehabilitation, in the proposal of community-based education.

Health care actions are intended exclusively for users of the Unified Health System and appointments are made through referrals made by Basic Health Units, following the procedures used by the Reference and Counter-reference System and by the National Regulation (SISREG).

The Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) is Anita's main partner for the development of integrated teaching, research and extension activities.

The articulation strategies with the Health Care Networks in the SUS, according to the priorities of the federal, state and municipal health agendas, represent the mechanism by which the ethical-political-pedagogical proposal of the ISD achieves Permanent Education in Health.

Health of the Person with Disabilities

In 2016, Ordinance No. 1,430 of the Ministry of Health authorized CEPS as a Specialized Center for Hearing, Physical and Intellectual Rehabilitation (CER-III).

On August 6, 2021, Ordinance No. 1,842, signed by Minister Marcelo Queiroga, officially changed the category of the Specialized Center in Rehabilitation Anita Garibaldi (CER ISD) from III to IV. From then on, in addition to rehabilitation services for hearing, intellectual and motor disabilities, the rehabilitation center operated by the Santos Dumont Institute began to assist visually impaired patients.

The first CER IV in the metropolitan area of Natal, the capital of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, and the second one existing in the whole state, will serve patients from the 7th Health Region, which includes the cities of Macaíba, Natal, Parnamirim, Extremoz and São Gonçalo do Amarante. This region concentrates 1,371,945 inhabitants, which corresponds to almost 39% of the state's population.

The CER managed by ISD is the first in the Northeast region to take care of the health of people with disabilities integrated into a research and innovation system, through the work developed together with the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neurosciences (IIN-ELS) .

The activities of the Center Specialized in Rehabilitation are organized in the following clinics:

Multiprofessional Residency in the Health Care of the Person with Disabilities

The Multiprofessional Residency Program in the Health Care of the Person with Disabilities, approved through a public call from the Ministry of Education launched in 2017, is a pioneer in Brazil.

The program is offered by the Anita Garibaldi Center for Education and Research in Health, and it's evaluable for professionals in the areas of physiotherapy, speech therapy, psychology and social work. This multidisciplinary work brings together teaching, research and extension, strengthening both the Care Network for Persons with Disabilities in the of the Unified Health System (SUS), and the National Plan for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – Living without Limits Plan.

In addition, the Program works together with Postgraduate Program in Neuroengineering of the International Institute of Neurosciences Edmond and Lily Safra (IIN-ELS) in order to develop solutions and innovations to enhance the patient's life quality.

The Anita Garibaldi Health Education and Research Center is open from Monday to Friday (with the exception of national and local holidays), from 8 am to 5 pm.
