International Institute of Neurosciences

The Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neurosciences (ELS-IIN) is one of the Santos Dumont Institute's (ISD, as Portuguese abbreviation) units located in the city of Macaíba. There, teachers, researchers and students have been developing teaching, research and extension activities in the fields of neuroscience and neuroengineering.

In 2013, the experience acquired on scientific research enabled the creation of the Master's Program in Neuroengineering, the first graduate program in Brazil existing in this field recommended by CAPES (33280010001P2). The ISD is an institutional member of the Brazilian Society of Biomedical Engineering (SBEB).

The disciplines offered by the graduate program of the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neurosciences focus on two main research areas: Brain-Machine Interface and Neuromodulation. The ELS-IIN receives students from all regions of Brazil.

The application process for admission of new master's students happens twice a year, and the information about the enrollment process are published online, here at the Santos Dumont Institute's website.

neuroengineering is an interdisciplinary research area that integrates neuroscience and engineering methods to study the functioning of the nervous system and develop solutions to the limitations and dysfunctions associated with the nervous system. This emerging area encompasses aspects of experimental, computational, theoretical, clinical and applied research at molecular, cellular and systemic levels. The knowledge generated in these studies enables the development of technologies and applications ranging from neuroprostheses to neuromodulation techniques with therapeutic potential. The works have behavioral, electrophysiological, histological and immunohistochemical approaches, combined with methods of quantitative analysis.
