Master Program in Neuroengineering

A professional who develops simulations of neural networks in machines powered by four thousand processing cores, which manufactures matrices of 128 electrodes with thicknesses smaller than a hair. An academic who produces three-dimensional images of the nervous cell system or works with brain-machine interfaces for the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries. Endeavors such as these are common in the day-to-day activities of students at the Master Degree Program in Neuroengineering of the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neurosciences (IIN-ELS, as Portuguese abbreviation).

IIN-ELS promotes, since 2013, the first Brazilian Master Degree Program in Neuroengineering approved by Brazilian Government / CAPES. The course has the following objectives:

I – To exploit high-level science in Neuroengineering;

II – To train qualified professionals for multi and interdisciplinary research in Neuroengineering, to work in universities, companies, and research institutions;

III – To encourage, disseminate and apply new knowledge and technologies in a regional, national and international scales;

IV – To promote science as an agent of cultural stimulation and integration with local communities.

The program seeks to train distinguished professionals, who transit between academic and business sectors (public or private), articulating the neurosciences with engineering. This future researcher must be well qualified in scientific, political, ethical and social areas, as well as developing the skill to work in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams.

The structure of the Program was designed to bridge the barriers between undergraduate courses in the exact, biological, and human areas. There is a real need for multidisciplinary training in Brazil, especially in the Northeast region.

The IIN-ELS master’s degree course is free of charge, has a duration of 24 months and its concentration field is Biomedical Engineering. The aplication process is open twice a year.
